When we think of discovery, we imagine sudden flashes of brilliance. Archimedes leaps from his bath shouting "Eureka!" Newton sees an apple fall. A composer hears an entire symphony at once. Arthur Koestler, in The Act of Creation, argued that these moments are real—but completely misunderstood.
According to Koestler, creativity happens through bisociation: the unexpected intersection of two previously separate frameworks of thought. Bisociation occurs in three stages: saturation, incubation, and illumination. The third part feels the best, but it is those who endure the first that we come to call genius.
Stage one is saturation. This is the work nobody posts about: reading, practicing, failing, repeating, collecting ideas, returning to the same problem over and over. It often feels painfully unproductive. Yet every hour adds another piece of the puzzle. Imagine filling a library instead of searching for a single book—without a large library, there are fewer ideas available to connect.
Stage two is incubation. Then something strange happens: you stop consciously thinking about the problem. You go for a walk. You shower. You cook dinner. You run. Your conscious mind quiets, but your brain doesn't stop working. Modern neuroscience suggests that during these quieter moments, networks involved in internally directed thought continue reorganizing memories and experiences.
The brain begins asking questions like: What else looks like this? Have I seen this pattern somewhere before? What if these two unrelated ideas actually belong together? The work continues underground.
Stage three is illumination. Eventually two distant ideas collide. The answer appears—not magically, but because enough raw material existed for a new connection to emerge. The bath wasn't where Archimedes did the work. The bath was simply where the work became visible.
Our modern environment trains us to escape boredom instantly. A notification. A podcast. Music. Social media. Another browser tab. Each interruption resets attention before deep work has time to mature. The irony is that boredom is often the doorway—not the obstacle—to original thought.
Staying with a difficult problem long after the initial excitement fades allows the brain to accumulate observations that later become insight. Many people quit at the exact point where meaningful progress is about to begin, because the work no longer feels stimulating.
The same pattern appears across elite performers. World-class runners complete thousands of ordinary training kilometers. Concert pianists repeat scales they've already mastered. Great designers sketch dozens of mediocre ideas before finding one elegant solution. Researchers read hundreds of papers before writing one original paragraph.
The repetitions are not glamorous. But they build an internal model so rich that new connections become increasingly likely. Mastery is often the accumulation of thousands of seemingly ordinary moments.
Mindfulness meditation is about training attention. You notice distraction. You gently return. Again. And again. Running can cultivate the same capacity. Running without constant entertainment creates space for observation: your breathing, the rhythm of your stride, the landscape, your thoughts.
Eventually the mind settles. Problems that seemed impossible often become surprisingly clear. The run itself isn't solving the problem—it's creating the conditions where the brain can reorganize what it already knows.
Original ideas rarely come from nowhere. They emerge from connecting existing ideas in ways nobody has connected before. The more diverse experiences, books, conversations, and disciplines you expose yourself to, the richer your internal network becomes.
Koestler called these separate frameworks "matrices." Innovation occurs when distant matrices suddenly intersect. This explains why breakthroughs often happen between disciplines rather than inside a single one—the designer who understands psychology, the engineer who studies philosophy, the physician who appreciates storytelling, the scientist who reads history. Breadth fuels originality.
Outworking everyone doesn't mean working more hours. It means staying engaged after novelty disappears. It means reading one more paper when curiosity has faded. Running one more easy mile. Revising one more draft. Sitting with uncertainty a little longer. Remaining present instead of reaching for distraction.
The competitive advantage isn't suffering. It's patience.
Most people are willing to work while something feels exciting. Far fewer are willing to continue when progress becomes slow, repetitive, and invisible. Yet that is precisely where expertise compounds.
The world celebrates the breakthrough. It rarely notices the years spent preparing for it. The Eureka moment is only the visible tip of an invisible process. The real work happens in the accumulation, in the repetition, in the willingness to remain with meaningful problems long enough for hidden connections to emerge.
Perhaps the goal isn't to outwork everyone through intensity. Perhaps it's to become one of the few people who no longer need constant stimulation. Because once you can tolerate boredom, you gain access to something increasingly rare in the modern world:
Enough uninterrupted time for your mind to create something genuinely new.
